This is officially the last week of my second trimester. That means I'm 2/3rds finished with my pregnancy! Every day I get closer and closer to meeting my little son, which also makes the reality come much more into focus. There is a lot more planning and preparation that needs to start now such as readying the nursery, starting lamas classes, touring the hospital, and making a birthing plan. As far as the birthing plan, I am still undecided between epidural or an au-naturale water birth. My husband and I spent this past weekend watching various birthing videos on YouTube, but I'm still not quite sure what route I want to take. I've always been extremely frightened of childbirth, and I have to say that watching the birthing videos actually made me feel a little better. However, they had the opposite effect on my poor husband. I think he was a bit traumatized by the imagery. :) Also, the videos didn't bring us any closer to making a decision. There are pros and cons on both sides, and I want to make sure that when the time comes, I am 100% confident in my decision. I do know, however, that since it is my first childbirth, I would prefer for any water birth to occur in a birthing center at my hospital, just in case there are complications. So, I will have to spend some time looking into those options more closely over the next few weeks.
As far as my body is concerned, I've been experiencing a lot more back pain, especially after sleeping. I tried using the remedy of sleeping with a pillow between my legs, but it infringes on my cuddle space with my husband, and it also necessitates that I stay in one sleeping position all night, which NEVER happens. So, I've pretty much abandoned that idea. Instead, I'm just sticking with the daily back rubs and hot water bottle. Another predicted symptom that I started experiencing was leg cramps. I had a couple of nights of cramping in my left leg, which was a real annoyance. The treatment I employ for this is typically a few stretches and a leg rub (either from me or my husband). Also, according to my pregnancy book, my uterus is now 2 1/2 inches above my belly button and the size of a basketball. Ironically, when I look in the mirror, it looks exactly like I'm walking around with a basketball under my clothes.
Here's what is going on with the baby:
- His growth is now measured from head to toe (instead of previously being measured from head to butt)
- He is about 15 inches long
- He weighs a little over 2 lbs
- He has more taste buds now than he will at birth
- He is tasting all the different foods I eat
- He is especially active after a meal. He does a lot of moving and kicking
- His brain is more active
- He may be experiencing little hiccups, especially after I eat
- He is sleeping and waking on a regular schedule: i.e. He always starts kicking around 8 AM
As usual, I still can't get enough of watching the baby move. Since his movements are visible outside, I just get a kick out of laying in bed and watching my stomach move along with his tiny body. He's such an active little guy. I read that the baby should be moving at least 10 times per day, and I know he is well beyond that number. I would say he is active at least once per hour...I'm just wondering if this is a look into the type of child he will be.
